Ramapo Saints Junior B Name Ken Scarpa Head Coach
The Ramapo Junior B Saints, proud members of the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League  (MJHL) have announced that Ken Scarpa has been named Head Coach and Assistant General Manager for the coming 2013-14 season. “This is a great opportunity for me to help provide players a vehicle to move on to higher levels of hockey if possible. With any Junior, team the goal is to be a winning and competitive team and I am looking to build upon the strides the Saints Junior B program has made over the last 12 months. Because of my coaching experience in the ACHA ranks and within USA Hockey District and Select Staffs, I think I have a much different outlook as to where most next level opportunities are for most players. I feel my job is to create a winning environment and help my players get to the next level so that they can achieve success whether it is higher junior levels in US and Canada or to those that can play at NCAA (D1 or D3) schools or high level ACHA programs which is largely misunderstood or considered as an outlet for next level college hockey.”

Gary Hess, Saints General Manager, has made considerable improvements to the program since his arrival 4 years ago.  “The naming of Ken is a great turning point for our program.  Ken has the ability and knowledge to put a competitive team on the ice, but also to work with our players both individually and collectively to get them to that next level of play, whether that is furthering their playing career at the Junior level, or continuing on to play at all levels in the college ranks.  I am excited about the opportunity to work alongside Ken and am confident that he will continue the improvements that we have made in the past few years.  Ken understands the importance of High School hockey to the players in our area and I feel he has the ability to work with these players and their High School coaches, if needed, to eliminate and/or reduce the conflicts that can present itself so that these players can play both.”

Coach Scarpa’s prior coaching background in hockey began in 1995 and has included the position as Head Coach with the William Paterson University where he took over in 2005 thru 2010. In that time, the team compiled a record of 106-34 and garnered its first two ACHA national championship invites. He also guided two NJYHL travel teams into the Atlantic District finals and winning a District Championship in 2011. He has been on the USA Atlantic District and Select Staff from 2005 thru 2008. He was named to the ACHA Select European Staff in 2007. He also was Head Coach at Paramus Catholic High School from 2003 thru 2005.  It is within that High School dynamic that The Ramapo Saints Junior B team hopes to embrace its roster. “Being a former high school coach I understand the issue. However, we will work with our players to avoid possible conflicts with High School. We realize its importance to the overall experience as a hockey player. We will not alienate players from their high school teams however we expect a dedicated commitment towards our team and an extremely high level of communication and understanding regarding schedule conflicts. There are no clear rules or answers to the problem but we expect to find a workable solution for everyone’s benefit.”

Some of the highlights of the Ramapo Saints Junior B program are an introduction to various Prep Schools, Colleges and Universities (both NCAA and ACHA Hockey playing schools) where players will be appropriately placed through an introduction to the schools staff during events and recruitment programs. Some of the highlights will also be tuition inclusion for invites to ACHA Coaching Showcases, Prep (Midget Major/ Minor) hosted tournaments, which include introduction to the prep schools staff and school tours.
