"...more than just wear pink laces"

2014-12-06

Ramapo Saints PeeWee B Blue

During the month of October, and in recognition of breast cancer awareness month, the Ramapo Saints Peewee B Blue team did more than just wear pink laces and wrap their hockey sticks in pink tape. The Players, Coaches and Parents decided to raise money to combat this disease.

Approximately 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.  About 40,000 women in the U.S. were expected to die in 2014 from breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1989, with larger decreases in women under 50.  These decreases are attributed to treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.

During the month of October, and in recognition of breast cancer awareness month, the Ramapo Saints PeeWee B Blue team did more than just wear pink laces and wrap their hockey sticks in pink tape.  The Players, Coaches and Parentsdecided to raise money to combat this disease.  Through their efforts on the ice, they were able to make a donation in the amount of $500, which was donated towards fighting the battle against breast cancer.

As a result of a formula based on goals and wins by the team during October, the parents of the team equally shared in the total contribution of $260.  The Ramapo Saints Hockey Club, through President Joe Brooks and Hockey Director Gary Hess, generously matched the parents’ amount with a contribution of $240 for the grand total of $500.The money was donated to the Carol Galvin Foundation, a local breast cancer foundation formed by Rick Galvin in honor of his mother who lost her life to breast cancer.
